Nathaniel Rayestu
Spanish Language Coordinator

Summary

Ray studied Economics in Universitas Indonesia and currently works at Ruangguru, a tech company providing services across a wide range of education products. He enjoys listening to podcasts, reading, and watching series on Netflix. One of his all-time favorite series, Narcos, is what convinced him to take up studying Spanish and he hasn't regretted it since. Aside from Indonesian and English, he also speaks Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.

Motivation

Ray has always been interested in foreign languages since he was little, but not until late 2013 did he take up anything (aside from English) seriously. He gets a kick out of being able to engage in conversations using a new language and believes Polyglot Indonesia is the perfect platform to meet up and practice with fellow language enthusiasts.

Biography

Ray is an opinionated person who enjoys engaging in conversations about politics, culture, and public policy. During his study at the Economics Department at Universitas Indonesia, Ray became active at several discussion groups and organisations, such as KANOPI (Kajian Ekonomi Pembangunan Indonesia) and BO Economica. Upon graduation, he worked for a private bank for 3 years before joining Ruangguru, an education-technology company where he currently works.

In his spare time Ray likes reading, doing sports, listening to podcasts, and binge-watching Netflix. An avid tennis fan, he hardly ever goes a week without hitting the court with his pals. One unusual hobby he has is Wikipedia-surfing, he likes reading up Wikipedia entries of historical figures, countries, events, and simply following through links to other entries he finds interesting.

He has been fond of learning about other cultures and languages since he was little. He tried taking Spanish lessons when he was a teenager, but it did not really work out that time. School work and extracurricular activities took the priority away from learning other languages. But his desire to learn languages didn't stop there.

After years of wanting to learn a foreign language besides English, he made it a personal challenge to learn Mandarin Chinese in 2014, which he has since found to be an especially rewarding journey. In 2016, after becoming obsessed with several Spanish series on Netflix (especially Narcos and Club de Cuervos) he started learning Spanish again, this time with better success. He absolutely loves putting his Mandarin Chinese and Spanish skills to use, and he hopes to travel to China and Latin America one day and put them into practice.
