Mandarin Language Coordinator

Summary

Fathan graduated from Social Work Study from Universitas Padjadjaran and continued his study by taking Mandarin Language in Peking University and Master's Degree of International Business in UIBE, China. He spent five years from 2011-2016 in China including working in a Chinese company Tianjin Hoidi Group Co., Ltd. in Tianjin and in an American artificial insemination company World Wide Sires Co., Ltd. in Beijing. Currently he works at Nurul Fikri Group as Director of a start-up unit within STT Nurul Fikri focusing in study abroad and language learning programs.

Motivation

Fathan basically loves to learn languages. That's why when there was a chance to get a scholarship from Chinese Government Council, he took it to learn Chinese Mandarin -- that for many, Chinese Mandarin is quite a challenging language to learn. He is willing to contribute his skills and also learning from fellow Polyglot Indonesia contributors or meetup attendants to learn more languages. He learns that the meetups of Polyglot Indonesia (Jakarta Chapter) has a positive vibe even though the theme discussed in the meetup sessions usually are heavy-focus-demanding thing: learning and sharing language skills.

Biography

Polyglot Indonesia sessions offer us with diversity. A very different languages skills, personalities, and backgrounds of people mixed and gathered.

Fathan was born in a Karo-Minang Father and Solo-Madura Mother; and it makes him realize how challenging it is working with diversity. But as an Indonesian we are naturally familiar with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, which is what Fathan thought as the greatest blessing of being an Indonesian.

During his early childhood to juvenile years he lived in a quite homogenous environment in terms of school and socializing. But when he went to Universitas Padjadjaran to do a Bachelor Degree in Social Work, he has to live in a very different setting of environment. Living in another city like Bandung-Jatinangor requires him to quickly adapt to his surroundings. He learned a lot from it.

He was involved in Pramuka Unpad, BEM Unpad, HIMA Kesejahteraan Sosial, and went to India in a short-period AIESEC Unpad program. He was also a participant of Rumah Kepemimpinan Nurul Fikri Bandung (called PPSDMS back then) in 2008-2010. He acknowledged that balancing college life and extracurricular activities was something that everyone might learn and figure out by themselves -- it goes on into work-life balance that he is facing in career-work setting now.

Coming from a family without Chinese ancestry, his idea to continue study to China was something shocking, especially for his big family. But when he turned his idea to study into reality by applying to Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC channel), he successfully convinced his father that everything will be alright and there is nothing to worry about. Spending 5 years in Beijing, Tianjin, and also traveling around dozens of cities in China as well as other countries, has widened Fathan's perspective towards how this world works. At this point, he learned a lot about how Chinese people work, think, and act, right from the source, not from stereotype. He also realizes that language is a vital tool to better understand and communicate with wider-range of people from different backgrounds.

He worked as a staff in Human Resource and International Business Departments in Tianjin Hoidi Group Co., Ltd. in Tianjin and another round in HR Department in the short-stay WWS company in Beijing. Learning that the Chinese people has a very different management style in work was quite a mesmerizing opportunity to experience first-hand.
