Aristo Prabowo
Dutch Language Coordinator

Summary

Aristo grew up in a multilingual household with parents that spoke English and a grandmother that spoke Dutch. Later on he moved to the U.S. where he graduated with a bachelor's in History and a master's in Near Eastern Studies. As a college student, he picked up Portuguese, Persian, Armenian, Arabic, and a little bit of Swedish. Besides being the Dutch Language Coordinator for Polyglot Indonesia Jakarta Chapter, he is currently a Curator at Antique Maps and Prints of Indonesia and handles PR for the Indonesia Nederland Youth Society.

Motivation

Having lived and grown up in countries with diverse cultures and communities, Aristo believes we would all fear each other a little less and understand a bit better if we can speak to one another. Languages should be doorways, not barriers, to those that speak them. He hopes that by working with Polyglot Indonesia he can connect speakers of different languages and create an environment where one can have a healthy discussion.

Biography

Born in Jakarta, Indonesia, Aristo was lucky enough to have an extended family with members in Indonesia, the Netherlands, the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Bilingual in English and Indonesian since early childhood, he learned bits and pieces of Dutch from his grandmother.

Later on he became interested in history, particularly the history of Indonesia and the Middle East. He graduated with a bachelor's in History from California State University, Fullerton in 2015 and a master's in Near Eastern Studies from New York University in 2017. As a student he first learned Arabic before quickly adding Persian, Armenian, Portuguese, and Swedish to his repertoire. Aristo credits his good ear, penchant for impressions, and the Duolingo app for his ability to learn languages quickly.

Since returning to Indonesia in 2017, he worked as a tour guide with Sahabat Museum Historical Tours. An organization based in Jakarta that takes history aficionados to historical sites in the Jabodetabek area and West Java, with special excursions to the rest of Indonesia. In 2019 he became the PR officer for the Indonesia Nederland Youth Society, a group that hopes to foster better relations between the two countries by empowering young Indonesians and young Dutch people through education, social activities, and career guidance. Currently his main occupation is Curator at Antique Maps and Prints of Indonesia, a Jakarta-based antiques dealer specializing in maps, lithographs, and photographs of Indonesia and associated regions.

Besides history and languages, Aristo is also interested in music, gastronomy, film theory, and philosophy. When not working he can be found at various cafes in Jakarta trying out the latest single origin coffee, in his kitchen testing new recipes, or at a bar enjoying a pint and watching a metal band.

He is currently learning Irish, Greek, Spanish, Russian, and Manadonese.
