On May 5th 2018 at Pusdiklat SGA, Adithya Thamsiel (Tio), Dyah Rahadyani Paramarini (Ririen) and Rinaldi, our team of  Russian language coordinators of Polyglot Indonesia Jakarta Chapter, conducted a Russian language session to the Indonesian mini soccer team – Garuda Baru who will compete in the Street Child World Cup 2018 (SCWC 2018), in Moscow Russia. The Street Child World Cup 2018 will be held in association with the Street Child United, an organization from UK which focused on charity using the power of sport, particularly international sports events. One of the missions of the organization is to change the negative perception and treatment towards street children in the world.

The mini soccer team consisted of nine street kids who mostly come from the Greater Jakarta Area, such as Tanah Abang and Bekasi, who were selectively chosen. The team members ranged between 14-16 years old. The kids could barely hide their excitement of meeting people from all over the world, visiting the far north country and most of all, competing in the Street Child World Cup 2018! The Garuda Baru mini soccer team was loaded up with a number of activities before their departure to Russia. Besides regular football training, the preparation includes Indonesian traditional performances rehearsal for the Festival of Arts and of course, Russian language class!

These nine kids amazed us with their spirit and curiosity. Within the 2-hour lesson, the kids were able to memorize the Russian Cyrillic alphabet, write and read words in it, say some basic phrases, greetings and even introduce themselves in Russian. Tio, our Russian language coordinator, previously studied in Russia and was therefore able to share some experiences, tips and tricks to get along with Russians and encourage them to practice their basic Russian confidently during their trip. English and other foreign languages are rarely spoken in Russia. There, all information and signs are written mostly in Cyrillic. Therefore, knowing basic Russian will come in handy for the Garuda Baru young athletes. We hope that the language skill can give an unforgettable experience during their stay in Russia. The language skill will also help them feel the country’s vibe and make the most of out their trip.

So kids, good luck for the games! We are proud of you!

Удачи, ребята. Вы молодцы и мы гордимся вами!
