Around the World: the Philippines, Pearl of the Orient Seas
PIJakFilipina.jpg

Dear Jakarta Language Enthusiasts,

The Philippines is one of the founding member of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) along with Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia.
But even though we are neighbors and in the same regional organization, we maybe only know the Philippines through their basketball team prowess, great singers, huge culture of beauty pageants, or reputation as annually stricken by typhoon.
The good thing is that Indonesians began to explore the Philippines more and more in the past couple of years, mostly only around coastal areas like El Nido, Puerto Princesa, Boracay, and the likes, or exploring the citylife and cultural landscape around Manila.

But other than that, what do you know about the Philippines?
Do you know that just like Indonesia, the Philippines has many different regional languages, most of which have several degree of similarities with Indonesian and several ethnic languages spoken in North Sulawesi?
Or that the Philippines also uses terracing landscape to cultivate rice?
Or that the Philippines is not only geographically similar to Indonesia in that both countries are an archipelago consisted of thousands of islands, but also that both countries are dotted with numerous active volcanoes?

In the seventh Polyglot Indonesia Jakarta Chapter's Around the World meetup series, we would like to invite you to learn more about the culture of the people of the Philippines!
In collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines and Sentro Rizal Jakarta, we will also learn simple and useful Filipino / Tagalog words and phrases!

Come and join us!
Halika at sumali sa amin!
