Good Day, Language Enthusiasts!

On Sunday, 3 June 2018, Polyglot Indonesia Jakarta Chapter conducted a meetup taking film as the main theme: Titled Taking On the Big Screen. The event was attended by 47 participants. They were introduced to the FIAPF-accredited competitive international film festivals around the world and the most recent best film award winners.

FIAPD, Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films, or International Federation of Film Producers Associations in English, is an organization that regulates some of the world's most important film festivals. These film festivals are divided into four different categories: competitive, competitive specialised, non-competitive, and documentary or short film festival. We took our participants on a journey through all of the competitive film festival administered by FIAPF: Venice, Moscow, Locarno, Cannes, Karlovy Vary, Berlin, Goa, San Sebastian, Mar del Plata, Cairo, Montreal, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Tallinn. We also watched trailers of the most recent winners in best film category: The Shape of Water, The Lord Eagle/Царь-птица/Тойон кыыл, Mrs. Fang, Shoplifters/万引き家族 (Manbiki Kazoku), Little Crusader/Křižáček, Touch Me Not/Nu mă atinge-mă, BPM (Beats Per Minute)/120 battemenst par minute, The Disaster Artist, Wajib, The Intruder/L'Intrusa, And Suddenly the Dawn/Y de pronto el amanecer, Grain/Buğday, Pedicab/Pauwi Na, and Night Accident/Tunku Kyrsyk. Some of the trailers bemused our participants, while the rest created a confusion rather than amusement.

Afterwards, the participants discussed which films that had left a profound mark on their memory and chose the best one among them to be presented later. Divided into French Table, Spanish Table, Dutch Table, Arabic Table, Japanese Table, Korean Table, and three English Tables, they presented a bevy of interesting films: The Motorcycle Diaries/Diarios de Motocicleta, The Battleship Island/군함도 (Gunhamdo), Forrest Gump, Children of Heaven, The Little Prince/Le Petit Prince, A Silent Voice/聲の形 (Koe no Katachi), Hidden Figures, Singing in the Rain, Pak van mijn Hart, Theeb/ذيب‎ (Wolf), The Devil Wears Prada, and Whiplash. At the end of the meetup, we watched a recent Indonesian film which got great reviews and garnered popularity abroad.
