Chapter Jakarta

Have you ever heard the phrase “Life’s never flat.”?

Well, in my case, it goes exactly the other way around. I could say that nothing spectacular has emerged so far in my life for it to be considered a milestone. Waking up every morning, going to work and then getting back home tired is not something we could define as groundbreaking. Repeat that for many years and you’ll find it a mere routine. But that, my dear friend, will soon change, should you bear with me in telling my story.

Chapter One : Where it all began

All the lights are off. The room is quiet. Everyone is virtually silent. The movie starts. It’s “The Pursuit of Happyness” (yes, with a ‘y’). But what’s so special about it, is that it’s in Italian. I’ve watched this movie before in English.  It’s about a father who struggles for survival in life with his only son. It’s a very touching story that will make you ponder the most precious things in life: true love, sacrifice and perseverance.

It’s the month of July 2013, and tonight I’m sitting here at the Italian Cultural Center in Jakarta with new friends. I registered to join this meet-up with Polyglot Indonesia Chapter of Jakarta several days before, and it would be my very first meet-up with this community of language lovers slash enthusiasts. I got wind of this community from the social media three months earlier and I thought: “Hey, this is interesting. I can definitely relate to this!” Since then, I’ve been wanting to join their activities.

I myself am an avid fan of foreign languages. Nothing interests me more than learning and speaking a new verbal system that I find so unusual and exotic. Listening to a Mademoiselle ordering croissants in French, an aristocrat with British accent mingling with a beautiful lady, watching a Japanese anime character fighting her enemies in weird costumes, a Chinese master displaying his kung fu skill while chanting in Mandarin, or listening to an Italian opera song on the stage – all these events never stop sparkling my brain.

I’ve collected many various foreign languages book over the years. Normally I would read and study them by myself. Often I quit not long after and forget them altogether for a while. The learning process is monotonous. The progress is slow. I desperately need another approach. I got to have partners to practice these languages. Now, I’ve found them in Polyglot Indonesia.

Chapter Two : The Highlights

From then on, I never miss any meet-up as much as I possibly could. We regularly meet twice a month, unless there were special days which require more meticulous preparations. At each meet-up, we’ll discuss a different topic, so there’s always something new. We chat in cafés. We gather in public libraries. We visit museums. We attend several events held by cultural centers in Jakarta. We meet native speakers from many countries and we interact with new cultures. We talk and we laugh, we have so much fun. After discussion, we will have a presentation, and everyone can share her or his opinions on the subject in a leisurely manner.

On August 14 to 17, 2015, participants from the Chapters of Aceh, Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Kebumen, and Surabaya met up for our annual assembly entitled the Polyglot Indonesia National Gathering (PING) 2015 in the historical city of Semarang, Central Java. This is definitely the major event of the year. I’ve never been to this beautiful city so it’s all new for me. There, I met a lot of new polyglot people whom I would probably have never been able to meet anywhere else. It’s so amazing for me to interact with these talented, enthusiastic and unbelievably nice friends from many cities, to share our love in learning and speaking foreign – as well as local – languages. For four days we gathered, discussed and talked about our plans and dreams, both for Polyglot Indonesia and for ourselves. Together we all did some brainstorming and came up with many interesting (and hopefully applicable) ideas for the organization. We shared tips, played games, gave presentations, and even competed against each other as small teams in “Lomba Tujuh Belasan”, a sort of competition game among the participants in commemorating our Independence Day on August 17th. It was so hilarious and we had tons of fun!

I cherish every moment I meet a new person with amazing talent, personality, and similar passion in languages.  This is what connects you. Through these interactions, you will get new perspectives. Meeting our polyglot friends has been an enriching experience for me. Through languages, you can enter a new world with unexpected possibilities and wonders, which may come as rewarding for you both culturally and intellectually.

Chapter Three : Un-Epilogue – The Adventure Continues

It is said that success requires hard work. But one should also look to the other side of the coin: to have a solid team. There will be a group of people who share your interest, passion and vision on that side. They can be the real leverage with which you can achieve even your greater goal. Together with them, every single effort that you make will be multiplied and you’ll be amazed at what you can actually accomplish with relative ease.

So, I sincerely invite you to my adventure.

Meet new friends. Practice languages you love. Enrich your life. Join Polyglot Indonesia.

And as for me now, life is no longer flat! :)

About the author

As a naturally timid person, speaking to a stranger used to be a daunting task for Rinaldi. Yet as he is also curious and eager to make new friends, he realized that the key problem was communication. He needed the right tool, and he found it in foreign languages.
